Class 62 visits The North Carolina National Guard Training Facility at Camp Butner.

Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy-Salemburg (TCA_S) candidates in Class 62 visited Camp Butner during their second week of training.  Camp Butner is the North Carolina National Guard Training Facility located in Granville County.  As part of the twenty-two (22) week residential program at Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy, candidates spend multiple days at Camp Butner and are instructed by volunteers of the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG).  Candidates receive instruction on the impact that diet and nutrition can have on their level of physical fitness and are introduced to the conduct of physical training.  Candidates are taught how to determine their actual pace count so they can incorporate that with military subjects of Map Reading, Land Navigation and Terrain Association.  Afterwards candidates are paired in small teams with a compass to navigate their way through a course of assigned points while utilizing the training they just received.  This small group tactic requires them to develop an understanding for the benefit of teamwork as this is a perquisite to the grueling obstacle course that next awaits them.  The Obstacle course requires them to develop confidence in themselves and their team members as a few the obstacles require assistance from others to successfully negotiate.

The members of the National Guard refer to their many personal and or military experiences while they are instructing candidates.  These personal examples emphasize the importance for candidates to help others build self-esteem, to foster esprit de corps among candidates, and encourages individuals to work to overcome their own physical and mental limitations.  At the end of their Camp Butner training, TCA-S candidates have learned they were stronger and more capable of facing the challenges ahead of them. A huge thank you to the NCNG for their support!
